10 Tips for the Fireworks Season

Before Darkfireworks advice

  • In the run up to the fireworks season remember to take your dog for a walk when it is still light outside.
  • If you have cats that spend time outdoors make sure to call them inside early. Give yourself plenty of time to get them in before it gets dark.
  • Think of all your pets, if you have a rabbit with an outdoor hutch, make sure to bring it inside at night.

During The Fireworks

  • Make sure all your pets are safe and secure. Close windows, doors and lock cat flaps if you have them.
  • When you bring your pets inside choose a room which is near the centre of the house and has minimal windows. Draw the curtains and turn on the television or some background music. The beat of the music can help mask the sound of the fireworks.
  • Make sure the room you have chosen is accessible at all times, but don't shut them in it. You need to provide food and water as well as litter trays for cats.
  • Provide your pets with somewhere to hide, you can create for them a comfy bolt hole or cubby hole. This gives them a place to get away and find comfort if they are frightened by the noise or flashes.

Fearful Behaviours

  • IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to ignore fearful behaviours. If your pet is panting, shaking or whining don't pat them or try to reassure them. Your pet takes this attention as encouragement and it teaches them that it is appropriate to be frightened.
  • If your pet has been anxious in the past then phone the clinic for advice. There are lots of options from calming foods and supplements to plug in diffusers for cats and dogs. These products can make this stressful time of year more relaxing for your pet.

Microchipping

We advise that you have your pet microchipped, and make sure the chip is registered with your correct details.
