Weight Clinic
Obesity is a problem that is very much on the increase in Ireland. It is often easily overlooked as weight gain is a gradual process, however it has been indicated that over 25% of Ireland’s pet population is overweight. With this in mind our dedicated nurses offer a weight clinic by appointment.
Obesity occurs when the level of energy in the food eaten is greater than the level of energy used in daily life. This excess energy is laid down as fat.
There are a wide range of medical implications for overweight pets. Obesity places increased stress on the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and joints.
It predisposes pets to:
- Heart disease
- Respiratory problems
- Diabetes mellitus
- Osteoarthritis
- Reduced exercise tolerance
Overweight or obese animals are also more at risk during surgical procedures and more likely to be prone to injury. Keeping an eye on weight and preventing weight gain is as important in pets as it is in ourselves!
Overweight pets show fat deposits over the ribs, along the back and abdomen. Your pet may have a noticeable paunch with a broader conformation. A quick test at home is to run your hands along your pet's chest, with gentle pressure you should easily be able to feel their ribs. You should also be able to see their waist, as a narrowing after the ribs and a tuck up when viewed from the side.
If you are concerned about your pet’s waistline, or not sure if they are overweight, just call and make a weight clinic appointment.
Weight clinic consultations allow us to give advice, answer questions and give practical tips for your pet's weight loss. It is important to realise that certain habits such as feeding titbits can contribute to your pet's weight problem. Also many pets that seem to be pestering owners for food may actually be looking for attention.
During the consult we weigh your pet and determine a suitable target weight. We will also check for other signs of illness, since obesity can also be a sign of other underlying health problems.
We have a range of specially formulated diets designed to help with weight loss and we can also advise you on a suitable exercise program to ensure your pet is successful in shedding those excess pounds! To follow your pet's progress we like to see them every two weeks for a weigh-in. Once they have achieved their target weight we can give advice on how to maintain weight loss.
Like any diet, once started this programme takes commitment from you and your family.
